The International Consumer Electronics Show (CES)

The Green Girl visited the International Consumer Electronics Show (CES) with her friend, Dan from Jonesnco LotD, this week.

The CES is an annual technology-related trade show sponsored by the Consumer Electronics Association held at the Las Vegas Convention Center.

Of particular interest to me at this year's show were the Sports and Fitness Tech and Sustainable Planet CES Tech Zones.

ANT + showcase at CES
In the Sports and Fitness Zone, there was a section dedicated to the ANT+ Alliance featuring smartphones and other sport, fitness, and health monitoring products. (Sorry, Mr. Green Garmin, ANT+ is not backwards compatible with your antiquated ANT technology.)

GlobalSat GPS-enabled training devices at CES
Speaking of Mr. Green Garmin, a company by the name of GlobalSat had a number of GPS-enabled training devices on display, such as the GH-505 GPS Outdoor Training Watch.

They didn't offer any pricing information so I don't know how they compare to other GPS-enabled trainers.

BodyMedia FIT at CES
BodyMedia had a booth featuring their BodyMedia FIT gadget that is an updated version of the their former device, the BodyBugg. The Armband also monitors how well you sleep.

The FINIS booth featured their SwiMP3.1G waterproof mp3 player.

SwiMP3.1G at CES
The SwiMP3.1G utilizes bone-conduction technology to transmit high-fidelity sound under water. The sound vibrations are transferred from the cheek bone to the inner ear.

At the Fitness Technologies USA booth, the UWATERG2 waterproof mp3 player was dunked underwater.

Said to be 'The World's Smallest Waterproof MP3 Player', the UWATERG2 can also be purchased with a 'life jacket' accessory that will keep the device afloat.

I am considering purchasing a UWATERG2. The device is priced at $59.96 and I can get an additional 30% off online with the CES Special coupon code CES4078.

I was pleased to see CES was making an effort to make the show as green as possible.

The Sustainable Planet Tech Zone featured themes such as advances in green building, alternative energy technologies, automotive developments, green business services and

solutions, smart grid technologies, solar and renewable products, sustainable packaging, and wireless convergence.

My favorite exhibit in the Sustainable Planet Tech Zone was from Miniwiz.

The entire Miniwiz booth was constructed of Polli-Bricks made from recycled PET bottles.

The Polli-Bricks provide a great alternative to conventional building materials because they are strong, lightweight and naturally insulated. In addition, the architectural blocks are translucent and allow natural light to filter through the material.

The Polli-Brick booth was lit up for the show using a special LED lighting system.

Another benefit of Polli-Bricks is that they can be easily assembled and disassembled so they are ideal for expositions and trade shows such as CES.

  1. Wow, Greenie, you are sooo smart :). I NEED a waterproof music player so I don't poke my eyes out swimming laps from sheer boredom. If you get it, let me know how it works. I'd really just rather have a waterproof radio, but am having problems finding one.

Anyway, glad you got to venture off to something that obviously makes your heart smile!

  2. I have a H2O audio interval and I LOVE it. LOVE LOVE LOVE it. I am sure music has made me swim more and swim better. I like the ones you looked at, the earpieces might be a little less tough to deal with.

  3. This is one show I could never go to. I would be drooling all over the floor. I love gadgets though I realize most of them we don't really need, just covet.
It is always interesting to see which ones shown at CES survive a year.

  4. That was an enjoyable post for me. My company has a huge presence at CES, but I never get to see or hear about the cool things you showed us. Really neat. I can't believe how cheap that underwather MP3 player is.

  7. Though trade-shows in Las Vegas are painful experiences (I go to 3 a year), those sections of CES sound really cool. I just got my first ANT device last week and it seems to be a good step forward.

  12. Ah damnit! I wish I knew you were heading out there! My PR firm works with a client that does heart-monitoring, etc and I would've loved to have you meet them. I wasn't there, but my colleague was out there. Glad you had a good time and thanks for the post on all these new tech toys!
